Types Of Child Custody

There are two types of child custody; physical custody and legal custody. Physical custody describes where the children will spend their time, whereas legal custody determines which parent is responsible for all decision making on behalf of the children. Except in cases where there is abuse or domestic violence, parents usually have 50-50 joint legal custody. When making physical custody arrangements, the court starts out with the goal of setting up an arrangement where each parent has the children for 50% of the time. For most families, a 50-50 split is not feasible due to the proximity of each spouse’s home to the children’s school, work schedules and other situations.
